Every year since 2002, Vallée Bras-du-Nord coop hires a dozen youth from Portneuf region who went through various issues of life (dropping out of school, substance abuse, delinquency, etc.) We offer them a few months in a different kind of school, the forest. Here, they work to build and maintain our trail system. This unusual approach forces them to confront a hostile environment that teaches patience, tolerance, discipline, teamwork, determination and perseverance. The success of this approach is great: during the first 12 years, 75% of the 140 youth who participated in the various activities in the Vallée Bras-du-Nord subsequently re-entered the job market or returned to school. The Valley builds on the work context in nature and outdoor activities, and uses these as intervention tools and alternative education. Our cooperative has developed considerable expertise in this area, and has become a leader in the field of intervention by the adventure and the work context. This approach now reaches beyond our borders.
Accompany young adults (16-30 years old) struggling with different life issues that affect their socio-professional integration by leveraging forestry work in Vallée Bras-du-Nord (trail development) and therapeutic adventure as intervention tool to push their limits (outdoor expeditions).
For nearly six months, we integrate a dozen youth to work developing and maintaining trails (hiking and mountain biking). A team of multidisciplinary professionals supervises the group of participants and accompanies them both in achieving their personal goals (personalized action plan) and work-related goals. The coordinators use forestry work to serve as an educational tool and intervention. Various activities, including workshops about pushing one’s limits and outdoor related activities also allow the youth group to develop skills promoting their social and professional integration. The cooperative team is often called upon to lecture on this intervention approach by nature and adventure, and share the impressive results recorded over the years.
While making their own path in life, youth participate in a major ecotourism development and thus live the pride of being part of the builders of this great project. To learn more about the success of this approach, testimonies, impact and goals, call our team for a conference.
